When is the problem of dizziness during pregnancy?
Dizziness usually starts towards the end of the first trimester of pregnancy. This problem can then persist throughout the pregnancy. Some people may experience vertigo after pregnancy. But not everyone will experience dizziness during pregnancy—that's not the case.
Why is the problem of turning the head?
Dizziness occurs during pregnancy due to certain reasons-
Hormonal effects: During this time, several hormones fluctuate in your body. These hormones can cause dizziness.
Increased blood circulation: By the end of the first trimester of pregnancy, the blood circulation in your body increases by about one and a half times. As a result, you may feel overheated and sweaty as well as dizzy.
Apart from these, there are other reasons that can make the head spin—
If the brain lacks enough oxygen due to insufficient blood supply to the brain. For example –
If you suddenly stand up from a sitting position in a chair or lying down in bed.[1] Blood supply to the brain is suddenly reduced.
If you lie on your back. Sleeping on your back puts pressure on the blood vessels for the baby. As a result, the blood supply to the brain may decrease
If the body is dehydrated
If you are tired of excessive heat
A sudden drop in blood glucose
If blood pressure or blood pressure decreases
If suffering from anemia[2]
If panicked or over-anxious for any reason[3]
If the medicine has side effects
Apart from this, if you have any other diseases like migraine and ear problems, you may have problems with turning your head.
Some home remedies for dizziness
You can treat dizziness by following some simple rules. However, if dizziness is caused by a certain disease, proper treatment of that disease should be done to cure it completely.
Follow these rules to prevent dizziness during pregnancy:
do whatever
Get enough rest during pregnancy.
Stand up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.
Drink plenty of water.
A healthy pregnant woman needs to drink an average of 2-3 liters of water per day. You need to drink a total of 8-12 glasses of water throughout the day as a cup or glass. [4] However, if the doctor has given any special advice in this regard, then follow it.
Eat small amounts of nutritious food throughout the day.
Exercise regularly—it improves blood circulation in the body and brain.[5]
If you turn your head while standing, walk slowly as fast as possible and sit on a nearby chair or bed. After that, if the head does not stop, you will lie down on one side.
If you turn your head while lying on your back, you will quickly fall into a crooked position.
Wear loose clothing that allows enough air to circulate.
Stay in an open and airy room. If necessary, you can also walk outdoors for a while. But don't walk or try to go outside if you feel dizzy and fall. Then ask someone nearby to open the window.
Do not do any work or physical exertion for a long time continuously or excessively heavy, but sit and rest for a while in between the work. Also drink water at regular intervals.[6]
If you feel that dizziness has started after taking any medicine, tell the doctor at the next checkup.
Avoid tea and coffee during pregnancy. Quit smoking if you have a habit of smoking.
what not to do
Do not stand up suddenly from sitting or lying position.
Do not suddenly bend down and pick up anything.
Don't wear shoes that are bent low. If necessary, sit on a chair or tool and put on shoes.
Do not wear tight clothing.
Do not stay in closed, humid and hot places for a long time.
Avoid activities that are likely to cause accidents while the head is turned. For example: going up and down ladders or stairs, driving a car, swimming or using heavy machinery.
Do not lie flat on your back or slouched.
It is not recommended to lie flat on your back during late pregnancy and labor. After 28 weeks of pregnancy, avoid lying on your back while sleeping. Because lying down like this can increase the chances of stillbirth.[7]
Dizziness is a normal phenomenon during pregnancy. However, do mention this to your doctor or midwife during your checkup.
When to consult a doctor?
Dizziness is a common symptom during pregnancy. But sometimes serious health problems (such as brain stroke, ear infections and pre-eclampsia) can also cause dizziness. So consult a doctor quickly.
If you have any symptoms you should consult a doctor immediately.
If the face, hands or feet are paralyzed
If there is nausea with dizziness
If you have difficulty hearing in your ears in addition to turning your head
If you feel like there is a buzzing or whistling sound in the ear with turning the head
If you have anemia
If you have frequent or prolonged vertigo problems
If you have excessive anxiety about dizziness
If dizziness is accompanied by any of the following 9 symptoms, it is important to see a doctor without delay—
Vaginal bleeding
If there is pain in the lower abdomen
If you have chest pain
If breathing is difficult
Chest palpitations
In addition to turning the head, blurred vision or changes in vision
If you have headache along with dizziness
If dizziness is evident
In case of head or stomach injury due to a fall, or unconsciousness for more than 1 minute
Also, even if you have a general dizziness problem, tell your doctor about the problem during your regular doctor visits.
